The light at the end of the tunnel ~ July 2021

It’s been a long haul since the Theater Season opened in December of 2019… the doors have been shuttered but they will be opening later this year. We are so excited to be able to represent these theaters and events once again: Key West Theater & Coffee Butler Waterfront Amphitheater, Marathon Community Theater, The Red Barn Theatre, Tennessee Williams Theatre, Waterfront Playhouse, Impromptu Concerts (50th Season), South Florida Symphony, Key West Business Guild ( Headdress Ball 2021, Pride 2022, Tropical Heat 2022 and WomenFest 2022), Anne McKee Fine Art Auction Catalog, Key West Songwriters Festival and new this year, Wesley House Family Services 40th Anniversary Valentine’s Gala and the 2022 Mayor’s Ball programs.

It’s been a long road

The Annual Anne McKee Fine Art Auction is going virtual this year ~ February 4 – 17, 2021.

54 Florida Keys Artists are participating in the exciting new format in these crazy times.

A little bit about the online auction: There are 54 pieces this year including an original Sal Salinero valued at $26,000. Online preview is open now. The in-person preview for the artwork will be at The Studios of Key West on the 2nd Floor lobby starting February 4 until the night of the auction.  We have placed a QR code in our print ads (see below) that will direct people directly to the auction website.

At 5:30 PM on Thursday, February 4, the online auction will open to bidding and will continue until the night of Wednesday, February 17th.  We have grouped the first 5 pieces in the first group and then every 10 art pieces are grouped together after that. Each group will expire in 15 minute increments with the first expiration at 7:15 PM.

The Anne McKee Artists Fund receives 50% of monies raised for each piece. We want to keep you in the loop…. July 2020

We hope everyone  is staying safe and healthy.  This season will be a hard one for  everyone connected to the Arts community and we wanted to keep you in the loop as to what we know today.

May 2020: The checkpoint into the Keys was still up and it was easy to take photos without any cars in them…

Key West Songwriters Festival 2020 is currently scheduled for  October. 7-11, 2020.  Any ads placed for the May event will still have a reservation in the program. We will double check to see if you want to update your ad from what you submitted in March.  Of course, you can still reserve an ad if you aren’t in yet.

Key West Business Guild: any ads placed will be reconfirmed  before the next program goes out.

  • Tropical  Heat 2020 and Womenfest 2020  have been cancelled.  Any ads placed will be moved to the 2021 events.
  • Pridefest 2020 is scheduled  for Nov. 18 – 22, 2020.  We will confirm your ads before we send to the designer.  Pride Follies is scheduled for Saturday Nov. 7.
  • Headdress Ball is scheduled for Dec. 26 at the Coffee Butler Amphitheater.  We will confirm ads before the program is designed.

Theaters:  Waterfront Playhouse, Red Barn Theatre, Tennessee Williams Theatre, Fringe Theater at this point are waiting.  Peter and I are ready to go when we know anything.  Key West Summer Stage was cancelled but Theatre XP is doing a stage reading at Waterfront Playhouse this week.

Music: South Florida  Symphony  will be doing all virtual  performances.  There may  be some advertising  opportunities. Impromptu  Concerts is looking at hosting a season but are also in standby mode.

KW Theater: I have not yet heard back from them.

Art: The Annual Anne  McKee  Fine Auction is still scheduled  for Feb. 17, 2021  at  The Studios of Key West. As the situation  is fluid,  it may be a virtual event with advertising  opportunities.

The other big news is that I started a Photography Book project that led from my bike riding around Key West during the shut down.  I am collaborating with Carol Tedesco and we have invited 24 other photographers to submit up to 14 images that were shot between March 1 and June 1. It will be a one time printing.

Participating photographers are: Liz Acar, Peter Arnow, Susan Bailey, Lynne Bentley-Kemp,  Joe and Ozlem Berg, Larry Blackburn, Michael Blades,  Kyle Campbell, Jeffrey Cardenas, Alyson Crean, Ralph DePalma, Roberta DePiero, Heather Dow,  Todd Andrew Feit,  Tony Gregory, C.J. Groth, Jay Hall, Mark Hedden, Martha Hubbard, Bill Klipp, Linda Klipp, Corey Malcom, Rob O’Neal, Steve Panariello, Carol Tedesco and Sharon Wells.

We received a grant from the Awesome Foundation to help with printing costs and after the printing expense,  all monies raised will be going to Sister Season Fund.  We’ve raised over $4000 towards printing cost of the 250 page book and at $49 each, we will be able to raise more than $10,000 for Sister Season Fund.  Click on the button below if you are interested in pre-ordering Isolated Island: The Key West Covid-19 Spring of 2020 or donating towards printing costs.

Be safe, stay healthy, wear your mask  and well,  you know…. wash your hands!

P.S. The photos below are just random shots I’ve taken the last few months. None are in the book because it was after the June 1 deadline.

2021-2022 Theater Programs to advertise in…

Key West Playbills is proud to present our advertising opportunities in the Performing Arts and Events Guide for the upcoming 2021-22 Season. All have planned robust “Come Back Seasons”.

We are honored to welcome Wesley House Family Services  to our portfolio this year.  They will have a book for their long established Valentine’s Day Gala on February 14, 2022, as well as the popular Mayors Ball which has been moved to March.

Two of our venues are offering exceptional advertising opportunities this year.  The Waterfront Playhouse will be performing all year long through August 2022 with twelve presentations. Rams Head’s Key West Theatre is also performing through the year and now distributing their Playbill at their Coffee Butler Amphitheater performances. In both cases there will be no increase for the prices of their ads.

The Tennessee Williams Theatre returns offering a season of popular Broadway and music events while the Red Barn Theatre celebrates 42 years of Big Things in a small space!

The Anne McKee Fine Arts Auction, which went digital last January due to the epidemic, returns to a printed program.

The South Florida Symphony is going digital on their programs through a cell phone app which displays their performances and advertisers.  They will be able to supply number of “click- throughs” to advertisers. We would be glad to show you how this works in person.

Impromptu Concerts returns to their monthly presentations at St. Paul’s church to celebrate their 50th Season.

The Marathon Community Theater has reorganized and taken over the operation of the film theater as well as their live stage (located in the same building.) They have an early closing date of August 27, 2021.

The Key West Songwriters Festival (one of top ten such events in the US according to Billboard magazine) returns to their May performances in many Key West clubs.

The Key West Business Guild has enjoyed great support from the community this year for its Pride, Tropical Heat, WomenFest and Headdress Ball Guides, and plans even bigger events next season.

It’s that time finally! Support the theaters with your playbill ad!
